I have designed a face mask pattern to help in the efforts to aid our healthcare professionals with masks until more supplies become available.

Fabric Recommendations:

  • 1 layer of 100% cotton flannel
  • 1 layer of 100% cotton broadcloth, muslin, or other tightly woven cotton fabric
  • 1/4″ flat elastic or round elastic cord OR additional broadcloth for making ties
  • 1 pocket layer of 100% cotton broadcloth, muslin, or other tightly woven cotton fabric (optional)

If you can – preshrink you fabric on hot in the washer and dry. This will make sure the fabric does not shrink and warp after sewing.

Video Tutorial

My amazing friend Daisy Viktoria was awesome enough to make a video tutorial. While you are here, don’t forget to give her Instagram of Facebook a follow!

For Both Versions:

Cut all layers. I am using a rotary cutter, but if you use scissors it is easier to mark with chalk and then remove your pattern and cut.

Fold in half and stitch the upper and lower darts using a very tiny stitch length. Do this separately for each layer. Trim the edges a bit to reduce bulk as shown.

There are two versions of the instructions from this point: Elastic Version and Tie Version.

Elastic Version Instructions:

Place the two layers right sides together and sew the top and bottom seams, leaving an opening in one seam to later turn the mask right side out.

Cut 2 elastic lengths 6.5″ or 7″ long (you can adjust for size as needed).

Place one side of the elastic flat in the corner along the side seams and pin. Do the same at the bottom of the side seam, keeping the elastic straight.

Sew the side seam and repeat for the other side.

Turn the mask right side out.

Press all of the seam flat and topstitch on the edge all of the way around.

Make three pleats as shown on the pattern. Pin and sew along the edge. Sew again 1/4″ away from the edge.

Ta da! All done and ready to deliver.

Tie Version Instructions:

  • Cut 2 strips of fabric 1 inch wide and 44 inches long.
  • Use a bias tape maker or fold the outer edges to the center and press.
  • Pin the center, unfinished edge of the mask on the center of the pressed strip of fabric and sew along the edge of the binding.
  • Fold over the binding and sew the entire length of the binding. Repeat for the opposite side.

I am a sewing teacher and cosplayer as well as mom of two boys. I have been sewing since I was 6 years and never stopped. Sewing is my art and my passion, which is why I love to teach.

This does not allow for filters to be placed inside. Does the flannel serve as a filter?

I will be adding the filter piece. My first design did not include space for a filter – the design was for just fabric.

I couldn’t get the written instructions for the tie version or the video to work.

What were you having issues with?

I don’t see the tie version on here? Otherwise I think I like your version the best if I can alter it to have a pocket.

Would you be able to post a link to the pattern for the non-pleated version?
